Is Saona Island Worth It?
Is Saona Island worth it? Yes for the beach and the sandbar pool, if you accept a long day and company. How the day runs, and how to dodge the crowd.
Saona Island is worth it for most visitors: the beach is the white-sand, palm-lined Caribbean that people fly in for, and the stop in waist-deep water on a sandbar far from shore is unlike anything on the Punta Cana coast. It is a long day, though, and on the big group tours you share both with a lot of other people. The way most guests have done it is Caribbean Route Punta Cana’s Catamaran Boat to Saona Island with Buffet Lunch, rated 4.4 from 4,765 reviews and from $71 a person (checked October 2026).

How the day actually runs
The listing’s own timetable is the best picture of what you sign up for. Pickup in Bávaro or Bayahibe, 30 minutes on the coach, a 15-minute break at a roadside café, another 25 minutes to Bayahibe beach. A speedboat takes you to the natural pool for a swim of 30 to 40 minutes, then on to Saona for about three and a half hours, one of them for lunch: BBQ, salad and Dominican food, with beer, rum and soft drinks from the bar. The return is by catamaran, an hour and a half of music, a dance show and the open bar, then the coach home. Eight hours on paper, longer if your hotel is at the far end of Bávaro.
What guests praise, and what they warn about
The recent reviews are mostly five stars and name their guides: Alex twice, Cristian once. One October guest called it really good value for money and another was amazed by the lunch on the island. The warnings repeat too. A September guest found the day good, beautiful and inexpensive, and full of tourists and endless noise. An October guest had not been told about the mosquitoes, which were gone by noon, and another advised repellent because there is a short walk. One wished the coach collected guests in the hotel lobby rather than at the gate.

Where the hours go
From Bávaro a large share of the day is spent getting there. On Vacation On RD’s Full-Day Saona Island Excursion, one August guest staying in Bávaro wrote that most of the day went on travel and that the trip suits people staying closer to Bayahibe. If you are based in Bayahibe or Dominicus, the same day is far shorter at both ends; if you are in Punta Cana for only three or four days, it is a whole one of them. The guide to getting there from Punta Cana has the drive times by tour.
When the big day is not for you, and what is
If crowds are what would spoil it, the island is still worth it on a different boat. The small-group tours reach quiet stretches of beach before the group catamarans arrive, and a private speedboat sets its own timetable. If you are pregnant, none of these boat days will take you, and several group tours state that they are not suitable for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility.
