How a Saona Island Boat Tour Works
Choose where you are picked up, then the boat, pack for sun and sand, and be at the lobby or meeting point early.
Choose Your Pickup Area
Almost every Saona boat leaves from Bayahibe. From Bávaro and Punta Cana hotels the coach takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half each way on the listings; from Bayahibe and Dominicus it is minutes; from Santo Domingo it is a 13-hour day.
Then the Boat
Group days use a speedboat one way and a big catamaran with music and an open bar the other. Small groups and private tours keep one boat for the whole day and reach the quieter beaches.
Pack for Sand and Sun
Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, water shoes for the rocky patches, insect repellent for the morning and some cash for tips and photos. Most listings do not take pregnant travellers on these boats.
Pool, Beach, Lunch
The day runs to a pattern: a stop at the sandbar natural pool, about three hours on Saona's beach with a buffet lunch, then the boat back to Bayahibe and the coach home.

The Guide
Which Saona Boat Tour to Book, and What the Day Is Like
Every tour reaches the same island. What changes is the pickup, the boat, the crowd and what lunch includes.
A Saona Island boat tour is a full day from your hotel to the island off the south-east tip of the Dominican Republic and back: a coach to Bayahibe, a speedboat or a catamaran across, a swim at a sandbar called the natural pool, and about three hours on a palm-lined beach with lunch and drinks. The tour this page puts first is JAC Tours Punta Cana’s Catamaran to Saona Island with Food & Open Bar, which the GetYourGuide search showed as booked 27 times on 22 October 2026, the highest count on the three Saona searches read the next day. It picks up in Bávaro, Punta Cana or Bayahibe, takes 8 to 8.5 hours, and is from $66 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.3 out of 5 from 1,175 reviews.

The listing is plain about the order of the day: depending on the sea and the logistics, you go out by speedboat and come back by catamaran, or the other way round. The catamaran leg is the party, with music and an open bar. On the island there is a buffet lunch of local food and free time on the beach, and on the way there is a 40-minute stop in the natural pool, a waist-deep sandbar in open water. Reviews from the week of 17 October name the guides Maria, Isaias and Danny, one calls it extremely good value, and another summed up the lunch as a meal with their feet in the sand.
Where the tour picks you up
Nearly every Saona boat leaves from Bayahibe, a fishing village on the south coast, so the real question is how far your hotel is from it. From Bávaro and Punta Cana, about 70 km away, the coach takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half each way on the listings checked here, and most stop once on the road for a coffee or souvenir shop. On several listings, hotels in Cap Cana and private rentals get a meeting point instead of a lobby pickup. From Bayahibe and Dominicus you are minutes from the boats, which is where the small-group operators are based. From La Romana’s cruise port there are shore excursions timed to the ship, and from Santo Domingo, Boca Chica or Juan Dolio the day starts before dawn and runs 13 to 14 hours.

The guide to getting to Saona from Punta Cana has the pickup times and meeting points by area.
Catamaran or speedboat
On a group day you usually get both. The speedboat is the quick leg, roughly 25 to 50 minutes from Bayahibe depending on where it lands, and it can be wet and bumpy; several listings rule out guests with back problems. The catamaran is slower, an hour or more, with shade, music, a bar and dancing. Small-group and private tours keep one boat all day, which is how they reach the far beaches and the snorkel spot at Catuano. The catamaran or speedboat guide sets the boats side by side.

What the price covers
The group days on this site cost from $59 to about $170 a person (checked October 2026), and they include more than the price suggests: hotel pickup, the boats, the stop at the natural pool, a buffet lunch and an open bar of rum, beer and soft drinks. What costs extra is the same on almost every listing: tips for the crew and guide, the photo and video packages sold on board, premium drinks such as piña coladas in a pineapple, and lobster, which is either a VIP option or a beachside extra. Two listings note that lobster is off the menu from 1 March to 1 June, the closed season. Some listings name the Cotubanamá National Park entrance fee among the inclusions and others say nothing about it, so read the “includes” list before you book. The price guide lists every tour from the cheapest day to a private catamaran.
The natural pool and the starfish
Every tour stops at a sandbar far from shore where the sea is only waist-deep, usually for 30 to 45 minutes. Starfish live on the sand. Look, but do not lift them: one Punta Cana listing states that starfish are protected and may not be taken out of the water, and others tell guests not to touch them at all. A guest this August who first did the trip 20 years ago found the starfish area much less clear than it was. The natural pool guide says which tours stay longest.
The crowds, and how to miss the worst of them
Saona gets more than a million visitors a year and was the most visited protected area in the Dominican Republic in 2019, and the reviews of the big group days say so: one September guest found it good, beautiful and inexpensive, and full of tourists and noise. The smaller tours get around it by timing. Quetzal Excursions’ small-group luxury catamaran reaches a quiet corner of the beach before the crowds, One Click Shuttles and Travel runs its four-beach VIP day in reverse order, and a July guest on Dominican Attitude Excursions’ small-group tour arrived among the first boats to an empty beach. The guide to the best Saona tour ranks them by budget, crowd and pace, and is Saona worth it? weighs the long day against the beach.
When to go, and who cannot
The dry season runs roughly from December to April, and searches for Saona boat tours peak in March. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and rough seas can cancel a boat day; the listings that mention it offer a new date or a full refund when that happens, and every tour on this site has free cancellation up to 24 hours before (October 2026). Pregnant travellers cannot join these boats, the days are not wheelchair accessible, and several listings advise water shoes for the rocky patches and insect repellent, because the mosquitoes are out in the morning.

Saona Island Boat Tour FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a Saona Island tour, answered in the first sentence.
On a day tour: a coach takes you about 70 km to Bayahibe, 45 minutes to an hour and a half on the listings, and a boat crosses from there. JAC Tours Punta Cana's Saona day with an open bar picks up in Bávaro, Punta Cana and Bayahibe; the Punta Cana guide has the details.
Yes for the beach and the sandbar pool, if you accept a long day and plenty of company. Caribbean Route Punta Cana's speedboat and catamaran day has 4,765 reviews at 4.4; see is Saona worth it?
About 25 to 50 minutes by speedboat from Bayahibe, and an hour or more by catamaran. Dominican Emotion's four-beach speedboat day lists 40 minutes from Dominicus; the boat guide compares them.
From about $59 to $170 a person for a group day, and from $760 for a private speedboat for two, on GetYourGuide in October 2026. Lunch and drinks are included on the classic day; see the price guide.
For most visitors the classic speedboat-and-catamaran day; for fewer people, a small-group tour. Dominican Attitude Excursions' small-group tour is rated 4.7 from 751 reviews; see the best tour guide.
Not on these tours: every GetYourGuide tour checked in October 2026 is a day trip, back on the mainland by evening. The longest is the day from Santo Domingo, 13 to 14 hours. The island is a national park with two small settlements.
Parts of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and The Blue Lagoon were filmed on Saona. The beaches the boats visit, such as those on the four-beach VIP day, are the reason it gets cast as a deserted island.
For its palm-lined white beaches and the waist-deep sandbar with starfish, inside Cotubanamá National Park. It was the most visited protected area in the Dominican Republic in 2019. The catamaran day from Punta Cana stops at that sandbar.
Yes: a private speedboat or a private catamaran, each for your party only, with pickup in Punta Cana. JAC Tours Punta Cana's private speedboat starts at $760 for up to two (October 2026); see the private tour page.
Most group tours use both: the speedboat is quick and bumpy, the catamaran slow, shaded and the party leg. Caribbean Route's day goes out by speedboat and back by catamaran; Quetzal's small group stays on one catamaran.
No: look but do not lift them; the listings say starfish are protected and may not be taken out of the water. The catamaran day from Punta Cana has an extended stop there; see the natural pool guide.
Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, water shoes, sunglasses, insect repellent and some cash for tips and photos. One October guest on the speedboat and catamaran day warns about mosquitoes in the morning, gone by noon.
Yes: every tour on this site has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, as listed in October 2026. That includes the classic day and the private speedboat; where a listing mentions bad sea conditions, it offers a new date or a refund.
